This is my first year trying raised beds, not gonna lie- I miss my 5gal buckets!! No planning of what goes where, guessing how much space per plant (1 bucket, 1 pepper. Geeze, so easy) not worrying if something would grow and shade something, no frantic watching the weather and trying to build mini cloches with gallon jugs and bed sheets, just move them inside. I never even trellised, just pushed the plant over the top of the railing and let them drape down on the outside of the patio. I made mine wicking buckets too, so I never worried about watering.
I'm sure ounce I get over the learning curve I will appreciate my beautiful new garden, but I'm feeling nostalgic right now…
I still do this and I have 5 acres to play with. But it is a good way to grow stuff either way. I like to see how it does in the ground and in contaners. Very good information and nicely done sir.
I recently found your channel and really love it! There's lots of great videos- Very informative and valuable insight. Thanks Scott, keep it up! Wish I could send you some mango and avocado, the trees have just begun to bear.
we do about 85 every year. can run soaker hose over a row of containers to water them
New subscriber. Very clear and informative videos. Soft and relaxing voice. The « Bob Ross » of gardening. Thank you sir.
I have a large, 1 1/2' across, glazed pot that I inherited with this house. We live in Zone 9. The first times I planted in it, the plants didn't survive more than a month. I've always thought their roots just got too hot. How would you use this type of pot where it can get to 110 in the summer?
Can you add worms to help in the larger grow bags or is that not beneficial due to size of area?
Thank you Gardener Scott! Your videos are so helpful! I was so excited to have a garden I made some mistakes but thanks to your videos I hadn't lost too much yet and was able to amend my soil in my containers this weekend by adding compost and worm castings to your recommended soil ratio and replanted all my containers. I know its my imagination but I felt like my plants were already happier! I am going to plant some peppers and tomatoes in buckets and compare them to how they do in my raised garden bed for my own little experiment. As always, thanks for sharing your tips and tricks.
I have used new and used black plastic pots ( like the plants come in) for the last several years. I really enjoy container gardening.
Scott, thank you so much for your videos. I am very much beginner in gardening and I have learned lot from it. Just a question…is there a website where I could see a some kind of table of what PH is optimal for different plants. Thank you
Do the 5 gal buckets need to be food safe or can you use the general all purpose buckets from big box stores?
It's nice to see someone else respects perlite for its aid in mixing up well.
For my containers I used bagged potting soil. I noticed on average that I have to water every two days. That sometimes changes though when the plants start to make… for example, cucumbers. Had to start pouring the water to them once they got into full production.
I love growing in containers in Denver because I can pull my plants inside if hail or a freeze is in the forecast.
Your native soil looks pretty bad. Raised beds and containers are definitely the best solution for you.
I am so impressed by the sheer amount of advice and information in your videos. Thank you so much for all your time and efforts,. You really inspire me to get going and prove that you can be a successful gardener even if you are only using containers. I really can't wait to get going with my container garden this year.
Quick question about the succession gardening you mentioned. You said once you pull the cucumbers out, then you plant beets, chard, turnips . Do you start them right from seed in the container, or are you starting them in the house first ? Thanks for a great series !!!
Gardener Scott,
I love your YouTube channel!
For succession planting in container gardening and/or raised bed gardening, does the soil need time to remain fallow for replanting in order to not play out?
Or can you simply revitalize the used potting soil and growing continuously (provided the growing season is suitable of course)?
Thanks
My grandchildren an I planted strawberries in large pots. Each grandchild has their own pot, because one of them told me that "someone eats all the berries and she doesn't get any". When they come over they all run out to check their pot.
I didn’t see notes on the potting soil mix so here’s what I got from the video.
Gardener Scott Potting Soil Recipe
2 parts peat moss
2 parts mushroom compost
1 part vermiculite/perlite
Add appropriate amount of balanced fertilizer for containers.
5/5/5 fertilizer.
Container gardening process.
1. Fill bag 1/3 full then water very thoroughly.
2. Repeat to 2/3.
3. Repeat to top.
Recommend moving to location before filling all the way.
Fertilize through the season.
This may be a silly question. I have a compost pile where some of it might be usable and I'd like to take some of the good stuff and put it in a container when I re-pot some plants. But I'm afraid to. Because of all the bugs in it. I'm afraid the bugs in the home-made compost will eat my plants. Are you supposed to wait until the bugs leave? Or use a portion that seems bug-free? Or just throw the bugs in and don't worry about it? Most of what I see are roly-polies, earwigs/silverfish, and ants. I also have earthworms. I'm also afraid to put the earthworms in the potted plants because I think they won't be happy there. Like they'll be lonely or not have enough room or not get enough to eat.
You have answered so many of my questions just watching some of your videos today. Thank you so much! From … New Zealand
