Great video! I've done numerous sketches of my property, as I've added new structures or landscaped different areas. My backyard is quite slopped, so that area can be a challenge. My husband and I put in the first privacy fence enclosing our backyard. We installed the cedar fence ourselves, one board, at a time, following the grade. Years later, I hired a contractor (he wasn't reputable) to replace that 30-year-old fence. He started building the fence sections, on my driveway, when I told him that would not work because I didn't want that stair-step fence look, he argued with me and told me he knew what he was doing. Last year, I ended up replacing that badly installed fence after only 4 1/2 years. I learned a valuable lesson, never hire someone based on how good they think they are, check out their references, and previous job performance.
This is a great set of videos. Very helpful. Although I don't have much slope or curves to contend with, this second video had a lot of helpful information and things to think about, like drainage and water sources for irrigation. One thing wasn't clear: in figuring out curved sections (last part of the video), he says you can measure two points along a curved flower bed and that will help you "find this point". Find?? Not sure whether he's referring to finding the area of a space or what.
Hi Garden Fundamentals! Your channel has been so helpful to me! I'm watching this series after buying my first home and I was wondering if you had any planning tips or strategies with how to landscape atypical properties? My home is a rural property with a pasture as a back neighbour and is essentially encircled with drainage ditches and swales (one along the pasture fence line, one separating the property line to the left) with a natural creek along the property line to the right. Because we are rural, we also have a septic mound to consider and a drilled well cap. Our property is an acre with minimal landscaping and is essentially a blank canvas, I'm stumped! Any solutions on how to design large rural properties?
Thank you, I discovered your channel by searching for garden design help, and I see you have many helpful videos on everything garden related, I will be binge watching them all !
