  1. Im an architect! I can be helpful! The roof pitch is pronounced like "12 to 4", meaning 12 horizontal to 4 vertical. I think 12×16 is a good footprint if everything fits the way you're envisioning. I'm not familiar with greenhouses but there's nothing inherently wrong with 12×16 architecturally or structurally. The lean to roof (we call that a shed roof) makes sense for the reasons you said. Having the sloped side facing south will help the sun melt the snow quicker. You could put clerestory windows on the backside of the shed roof to get some great air circulation in the summer if theres another window down lower to the ground (look up stack effect ventilation). I wouldnt use untreated lumber, even sealed, because it can lead to rot and structural problems. You really should use pressure treated wood, or if that's off the table you could look at heavy gauge steel studs which act structurally very similar to wood framing. Hope this helps!

  2. I have been obsessively gardening for about 5 or 6 years and have had soo many failures over the years and have learned a lot. I love to share the knowledge that I have painfully gained! 🙂
Some suggestions I have are that I would suggest covering that dirt pile with something that fully blocks light asap. The grass that was scraped off will take a while to kill and decompose and if it’s not dead it will grow up through the soil in your garden. Blocking the light helps a lot. Also weeds will sprout on the pile as soon as it’s warmer. Alternatively you could just try to rake or sift the grass out. It’s a lot of labor though.

  3. If you want a gabled roof for your greenhouse then here's something to consider: the general rule of thumb when building greenhouses is that its orientation (length-wise) should be North-to-South so that as the sun rises/sets the structure will get the most amount of light on the two longer sides throughout the day (this does not apply to people that live further north; their greenhouses should be orientated East-to-West since the sun doesn't come up as high). If the space you have available in your yard is limiting you to building one that would be East-to-West then a lean-to roof may just be the best option to maximize the amount of light you would receive. Source: I am a horticulture student and took a greenhouse course last spring. Best of luck!! <3

  4. I just found this other channel called acre homestead and I think it could be very helpful for you. Might give you an insight in space for the plants if you see the lush garden before harvest 🙂

  5. I’m so excited to see your garden this year! You seemed to learn a lot last year & you’ll learn a bunch this year. Research is great but there’s nothing like experience!

  6. Love the balcony garden idea! Would love to start something on my balcony, but I dont know where to start

  7. I absolutely love the idea of doing a mini garden!! I am super interested in growing herbs, fruits, and veggies, but I definitely do not have tons of space. I would love to learn together!

  8. As well as companion planting you should also consider how you will rotate your crops from year to year. You don't want to be planting things from the same family in the same place every time or you can get a buildup in the soil of the pests and diseases that those plants are vulnerable to. I love your garden plan! I can already visualize how beautiful it is going to be. You've gotten me so inspired to start planning my own garden for this season.

  9. I've found that romaine lettuces are some of my most successful spring and fall crops, would highly recommend! They definitely just don't do well in the summer heat though. Also just a heads up, different corn varieties need at least 100 feet of distance between them or they will cross-pollinate, and the corn produced will be a mix of the two varieties. Lastly, super excited to see your luffa videos as it's my first year growing them and making luffa sponges as well!!

  10. Watermelon isnt a natural climber so you'll have to make sure you keep tying it up. And the watermelons will fall as they grow larger. It's best to let them trail on the soil. (we grew watermelons commercially when I was a kid)

  11. Just FYI asparagus takes a few years before you are able to harvest. And garlic is usually best planted in late fall for an early summer harvest;)

  12. Watched this video while going through all my seeds that I still have from last year! I’m so excited to see how your garden looks this year. It will be year 2 of my garden I built at our home this summer too and I am learning from my mistakes from last year for sure!! Haha, also excited to branch out and try new things this year.

  13. The beginning where you said “What else can I grow?” was very Isabella vibes from Encanto. You’ll have to check it out if you haven’t seen it yet

  14. My brother helped me build my first greenhouse last spring. We found 80% of the windows, including the door. 8x10x9h. Lean-to style. My tallest windows went on the south wall (9ft). Made the roof out of corrugated plastic made for greenhouses. Gravel floor. Insulated where there is no windows. And have electric. We used pressure treated wood and all my plants are happy. You are going to drive yourself crazy with research! I did. In the end, it’s not perfect but we built it on a whim. And I love it. It’s turned into more of a sanctuary than anything! Especially this winter. 5 degrees outside but always 60 in the greenhouse! From start to finish I spent approx $2500 and that was with mostly free windows and much smaller than yours and I pinched a lot of Pennie’s! Enjoy!

  15. So many exciting plans! I can’t wait to see how it all goes this year! Thoughts…
    – why don’t you just buy an arbor?
    – I’d plant pumpkins in the ground.
    – Rosemary is also grown as a landscaping plant in Arizona and California! It’s easy to grow, gets big, and is beautiful!
    – Last year, I feel like I remember you saying you didn’t have to worry about pests in Missouri. 🤣
    – Is this leveled out garden plot for the greenhouse?
    – Mmmm sweet corn. I think you’ll need a whole bed for the corn! And only plant one kind. They can cross pollinate and you don’t want that.
    – The greenhouse—I know you have a whole plan for the greenhouse, but I’m surprised you haven’t been able to find a used greenhouse you can move to your property. I feel like it would be the same or cheaper than building a whole new one…?

  16. My husband builds houses for a living, I honestly would not be able to tell u the right thing to do lol but I can show this to my husband and get his opinion and then reach out to u and let u know, he would also be able to answer any questions u have. If u would be interested in his opinion or have any questions u would like to ask a professional builder. Please let me know😊
Ps. I love your garden videos so much!💕

  17. We are building a greenhouse also and we decided to use our pool as the start of it. I know it sounds crazy but I think it will be great when we get it done. The pool is in the ground mostly so my thought is that will help with the heating and we are putting a clear panel roof for lots of sun that has shade cloth pulls for when they are needed. My husband is still working on the plans but I’m excited to get it done. Anyway just to say I understand your feelings and thoughts on how you want to do it for best results and to keep cost down as much as possible. Good luck with yours I will be waiting for updates.

  18. If you haven't already, check out the book Carrots love Tomatoes. It's been in publication for decades so it's a well trusted resource. I have a copy handed down from my grandmother to my aunt to me that I treasure, complete with margin notes from Grandma!

  19. This randomly popped in my head so I had to comeback lol, But compost?! Are you still thinking of putting that 3 stall/pallet compost station in?

  20. Also, if you want to grow corn you're going to need a lot! Like 100 sq ft is generally recommended! It's wind pollinated so it benefits from having lots 🙂

  21. garden vlogs i've been waiting for these, can't wait to see your garden vlogs, hope will be more than last year.hope you will film all of it. good luck

  22. Please do a video on a small balcony garden!! I don’t have outdoor space but I think that is something I could do 😊 every time you talk about your garden it makes me want to garden so badly!!

  23. You’ll also want to be aware of what season your growing certain crops in. Broccoli generally only likes growing in colder seasons (early spring). But every zone may be different.

  24. I really hope you guys choose an arched arbor! Or, you could do it, yet squared off so you don’t need to buy more machinery or outsource it!

  25. I would be very interested in a balcony garden. I’ve got a very limited outdoor space (I actually have no outdoor space, but lax management so if it’s pretty it’ll be overlooked)

  26. Reclaimed French doors would be beautiful!!!!! ❤️‍🔥 you mentioning it immediately made me think of MaCenna!

  27. I have heard you have to wait two or three seasons to eat the grown asparagus, but fact check me 😅

  28. About corn I've heard that some sorts can cross pollinate and then they don't grow properly, so check that before putting them out.
There's also a method of growing called Three Sisters (at least in Sweden), which originally came from then native Americans. The method is to grow your corn, squash and beans together. The corn acts like support for the beans and they bring nitrogen to the ground for the squash.

  29. Idk if this comment is too late or not, but I would say not put pumpkin straight in the floor of the garden. In my experience, we planted pumpkin seeds in the corner of our yard for a mini pumpkin patch. Definitely was NOT mini lol. It takes over and is hard to not have powder mildew. It also came back 2 years after trying to get rid of it

  30. I grow lettuce in window boxes & it does well but they are a cool weather plant. In the heat of the summer it dies back. Asparagus takes 2 years to mature. Make sure to pinch back zinnia early for lots of flowers, otherwise they get leggy.

  31. I grow lettuce in window boxes & it does very well but it likes cool weather so it dies back in the heat of summer. Make sure to pinch back zinnia early so you get bushier plants & more flowers. Hanging strawberries is the way to go and also cherry tomatoes. Asparagus takes a couple of years before you can harvest. I have a cutting garden & it is my pride and joy, so I say this from experience put it inside the garden fence because deer, rabbits & groundhogs will love those flower buds. Also – have fun! I enjoy watching you on this journey. Sorry – my random comments are all over the place.

  32. I'm finally in 2022 and getting closer to current! I'll be sorry not to have new videos to binge every day but I'm super excited to see your garden this year and your new greenhouse.
