What is my Leek doing?!

I planted a leek for the first time ever this year. And I am pleased with the Progress it’s made. I am thinking about harvesting, but I am not sure what this is.

Is it a new bulb for me to plant next year? Is it a flower, or maybe just some random growth?

Does anybody have experience with this, and can tell me what it is. Some googling didn’t give me any answers.

    Thank you in advance!

I believe it’s going to seed. If you don’t harvest regularly, the shoots will go to seed like yours shows, and it will produce a flower up top with seeds. But please, someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Collect the seeds that come out and plant them for an infinite leek hack.

That’s the flower bud prior to opening. It is attempting to create seeds.

That is a bloom shoot. It will bloom and then seed.

It’s going to seed, due to cold weather. It will cause the leek to be bitter.

I’ve never had one go to seed before, but have grown elephant garlic which looks very similar. For the garlic that stem is called the scape & those are cut off to force more energy into growing the garlic head.

If it was me I would cut off that part. If it’s not woody you can cook it in a soup, or stir fry. We usually just eat the stem part & not the flower, but I think all parts are edible.

Edited to best represent the plant. ✌🏻🤍

Flowering, if you let it continue you will get seeds for more leeks.

Making baby leeks. Well, seeds. That will grow into baby leeks.

It’s Bolting. Essentially the leek is using the last of its energy to produce a flower that ultimately produces seeds.

https://imgur.com/FJw1ouk.jpg here is a leek flower from my garden a few years ago. The pollinator love them. Let the seeds sow and cover with compost or leaf matter to winterize the seeds for spring.

What you’re looking at is leek foreplay. That leek is about to get freaky with some other leeks.

Not leek related, but if you like arugula, grow nasturtiums instead. The taste is identical and will last all summer, unlike arugula, which gets unpleasant after it bolts Great in salads
