Broccoli bolting? I was told to not leave it too much longer or it will flower. Any indications this may be about to happen? It’s my first season growing Broccoli

eat it, it’s not going to get bigger

it’s hard to grow broccoli in a worthwhile way ime and other brassicas tend to be better imo

  2. It does look like it’s trying to flower. Has it been quite warm? my brassicas are going strong but I’m the south island of NZ so a bit colder

Broccoli is essentially unopened buds – so yes, it’s trying to flower (otherwise there’d be no broccoli head), and you are supposed to harvest right before the blooms open. When the first blooms open at the edges at the latest. It won’t grow in mass much, so essentially it’s the right time to harvest.

Ive planted coliflower in a seed tray, in my kitchen, on a heat pad.

The seeds sprouted in 48 hours!

Is this ok? Are they doomed to a leggy life of long stem?

  5. It’s too hot or a small head variety. Later it will produce some side heads

Once you’ve cut off the main head (as someone else has mentioned) it will grow little florets on the stem. I like to leave these flower and collect the seeds for next year.

There is at least one variety more tolerant of heat you could try next time

Needs more root space to get bigger heads.

Why grow brocolli? it takes a lot of space and makes very little brocolli, I personally do bokchoy its just tastier.

This is perfect broccoli, eat it now. It’s not going to get bigger. If you wait, the head will just continue into flowering.

**UPDATE** Thanks all! I’ve harvested the heads from the two largest plants, along with some leaves for stir fries. Pretty pleased overall still for a first go at Broccoli.

The long-term goal is to reduce our dependence on store-bought food, but we’re very much at the experimentation stage of trying whatever looks fun/tasty/will provide a learning opportunity. Definitely my favourite part – gives my ADHD-riddled brain all those beloved hits of dopamine. 😅

Cheers for the input, all! Brassicas have been a fun experiment and I’m thinking Kale will probably make the cut for an every year, large quantity crop. Broccoli might be relegated to the “if I’ve got a spare pot and feel like growing one for fun” pile.
