Does anyone know if it’s possible to taste these little apples?

These look like crabapples? Technically edible but usually the sour taste is overpowering and they are not eaten raw.

I love crabapples. Super sour and crunchy – a bit bitter but delicious still.

My mother used to make the most beautiful jelly from crabapples like those- the ones she used were red all the way through, and the jelly was ruby-red too!

We had a crabapple tree on the front yard growing up. The fruit is quite bitter but makes some great jelly.

Those are crabapples. Not usually eaten raw but they are good for jelly and hard cider. They make good jelly because they’re full of pectin. Added to sweet apples in limited quantity, they’re good for hard cider because they add tartness and bitterness. This makes a more flavorful cider.

Some crabapples are sweet and delicious raw, but that’s uncommon. In any case, they aren’t toxic so you can just taste and see.

Best liquor my mom ever made… Crabapples, sugar, vodka. Agitate once a day for 30 days then strain, and enjoy over ice. Google should find you a recipe with proportions if you’re interested.

Technically anything is edible at least once.

My 3yr old, when informed that these were called crabapples: “WHAT? Crabs don’t eat apples!!”

Why does this look a bit like hawthorn

Be cautious eating too many of these. The sourness can cause your stomach to feel upset. This is also affected by your personal biology somewhat.

    Great for making jelly tho!

  13. If you decide to eat a lot of them you might get some diarrhea, this happened to me as a child. I loved eating them off the tree at my grandparents house. Love little sour treats.

Also supremely delicious as apple butter. Very easy to process and does not require skinning/coring.

I used to have a dog that loved eating crabapples. Thanks for the memory!

We have 2 crabapple trees in our yard & our kiddos love them! I’ve previously made applesauce, canned apple pie filling, a thicker apple ‘juice’ which was essentially an apple syrup & friggin delicious on vanilla ice cream!

Those make the best and most deeply flavored apple jelly.

Crab apples are just fine to eat. Some of them are just not going to be pleasant to eat. We have a range of crab apples near our house, and some of them produce wonderful small apples and some of them produce bitter little balls of sadness.
