When there are no drainage holes, it’s still possible to keep a thriving plant – the secret is light! Root rot occurs when roots are left sitting in overly moist soil for long periods but when there is enough light, the plant is photosynthesizing and thus, using up that soil moisture. A former co-worker planted this pure green spider plant into an old cake cover – no drainage holes. I explained to him that you only have to be careful to pour in an amount of water that is less than the total volume of soil and ensure the plant sees as much light as possible (and that it can handle some full sun).
