For some tropical foliage plants, you should observe how long it takes for the leaves to become slightly droopy. The time to water would be just a day or two before this happens. Of course, there are other considerations: some plants will not show obvious signs of being thirsty, others will not recover “nicely” from severe thirst (as in, some foliar damage will be permanent). Pothos and vine type philodendrons are quite forgiving
