In the past, people have stopped throwing old tights away and kept their egg cartons for beneficial reasons outside, but now there’s a reason your used tyres are crucial too.
Rather than discarding old tyres, they can be repurposed into imaginative garden planters, raised beds, vertical gardens and even furniture such as ottomans.
They are also ideal for creating distinct planting zones, such as for trailing plants, flowers or small shrubs.
Numerous social media videos on TikTok have shown how many gardening fans have used their old tyres to liven up their outdoor space.
How to use old tyres in your garden:
Holding onto your old tyres can be a brilliant way to transform them into garden planters. Before you get started, make sure the tyre is thoroughly clean and coated with primer.

If you are using a tyre for vegetable gardening, make sure to line it with plastic to prevent direct contact with the rubber.
It’s important to use a cover as tyres breakdown over time which can cause toxic substances to leach out, contaminating the soil and plants.
When turning your old tyre into a planter, ensure the rubber is clean so the paint and primer can adhere firmly. Once it’s dry, add the primer using 2-3 coats across the full tyre.
This makes sure it’s sealed against the elements so the paint can hang on more thoroughly. The primer could take up to 1-2 hours to dry, once it’s ready, you can then paint it.
Once you’re happy with the tyre, position in your garden so you can then line and repurpose it in whichever way you’d like.
