I bought this house a year ago. At first I thought the tree was sick. I don’t know from what. We also are realizing the wood peckers are destroying the tree as well. It’s got black all over its bark. Can someone tell me what’s wrong? Can i do anything to fix it? Thank you in advance

It’s got one long dead branch in the center, which is fairly normal and doesn’t look like it poses a hazard unless your house is very close. The dark on the trunk is sooty mold, which sounds like an issue but it isn’t, basically just dried, old sap that stained the bark and nature taking its course from there. Then there’s white lichen patches, which means nothing more than you have good air quality
Clean out the dead and see what happens. It’s already thinned out pretty well. Otherwise, I can’t see anything in the photos that would strike me as clearly hazardous to the tree’s health
