Local volunteers rolled up their sleeves today to help make upgrades to a community garden space.
The project aims to improve accessibility for community members while replacing old garden beds at the Otsiningo Park Community Garden.
It builds on work already completed…which included the removal of 16 older beds and and the installment of a new accessible surface.
As part of today’s work, VINES employees helped to build 26 new raised garden beds, 12 of which will be accessible.
“As an organization, we started with the idea of combating food insecurity in the Greater Binghamton area, and that’s our number one goal day in and day out,” said Johan Gelsma, Community Gardens Program Manager at VINES. “And with these garden beds specifically, as we mentioned, people with all sorts of different mobility needs, it’s a really great place where we can have partnerships with a lot of different other community organizations who serve clientele that have various mobility issues.”
