South Surrey Garden Club set to host 36th annual plant sale

Green thumbs should mark their calendars for May 9, when the South Surrey Garden Club holds its popular annual plant sale.

Now in its 36th year, the annual sale is one of the largest in the Lower Mainland, with more than 2,000 plants featured for sale, all lovingly cared for by the sale’s propagation team.

Set for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 9 at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, 12953 20 Ave., the plant sale is also a perfect precursor for Mother’s Day on May 10, especially for moms who like plants and flowers.

Interested plant purchasers are encouraged to arrive early for the best selection, according to a release from garden club communications director Liz Knight.

Sun-loving perennials, shade plants, unique trees, vegetable seedlings, hanging baskets, and unusual specimen plants will be featured at the sale, along with experts to help browsers choose the right plant for even the most difficult spots in their garden.

Gardeners will also find gently-used tools, soil amendments, and gardening gloves for sale.

A special kids-only Mother’s Day table will have gifts, plants, and pots perfect for mom as well.

“Over the years, our sale has become a fixture in local gardeners’ calendar. We are working hard to get ready for this year’s sale, and we can’t wait to see everyone on the ninth,” garden club president Debbie Mellenger said in the release.

A major fundraiser for the club, proceeds support their monthly speaker series (free to members; $5 for the public), garden tours, workshops, and a number of other activities.

Interested green thumbs and gardeners can join the South Surrey Garden Club right at the plant sale for just $10 and enjoy all of the club’s activities this spring and summer.
