Ten years ago I became interested in my yard for the first time. Previously I’d not had two thoughts about plants. I made a lot of mistakes, big and small, the largest being using weed barrier with gravel on top for a large chunk of the yard. Slowly I’ve been taking that gravel up and removing the weed barrier. I’m mixing in homemade compost into the soil and covering with mulch.
Because I am now a slut for good soil, I am sifting the gravel as I take it up. Look at this gold I’m getting — ten years of organic matter breaking down in the gravel.
Rocks make crevices, crevices collect debris, debris becomes soil.
