Recently bought a house in Kansas yard needs some work but this isn’t something I’ve had to do before. Any advice would be appreciated tried to negotiate some of it with the buy but no luck. These are pictures of the front yard Thanks
Cut back the tall grasses to be about 6” tall. The lawn looks fine. Scrape the dead grass to dirt and seed with a little top soil. Put down fertilizer. This is a good starting point

Congrats on thr new home!
For the beds…weed/dig out the old plants. Use a rake to smooth out the ground as much as possible. Go to home depot or nursery and buy a few plants (I like begonias and mum. Hostas are hardy but they can get big) and place them were you think you want them. Dont take them out the pot yet, just place them and figure out where they might go. You are sort of designing, so.move them around until you are satisfied.
When done with designing, go ahead and dig holes for the plants and put them out of the pot and into the ground. You want to put them in about an 1/2 to 1 inch deeper than they were in the pot.
Spread brown paper, newspaper, or cardboard on the rest of the flour bed and around the plants, then put mulch about 2-3 inches deep. This will keep weeds away for a bit but realize every now and then you have to pick weeds out of the beds.
By the way, use the paper or cardboard method…DO NOT USE that fabric/plastic weed blocker stuff. It is expensive, it is not biodegradable, and when (not if but WHEN) weeds grow on top, it is a mess to deal with.
Now water the root of the plant.
For the grass, I think you fertilize and water until about September, and then you seed. This sub has some really good grass experts so they can guide you. But flower beds…yeah I know about that.
