Hi,

we’ll be building a deck in the next few weeks and sadly our blue spruce is in the way.

We would like to move it a few meters to keep it but are not sure if it’s easily doable or not. The tree is approx 6ft tall and has been there for 20 years probably.

Any tips or recommandations before we start trying?

thanks

Worth a shot. Use a sawzall to cut a circle around it severing the roots. Aim for an 18-24 inch diameter circle. Then use a shovel to try to dig it out. You can cut a second circle a little wider than your first to get rid of some of the root chunks that might be in the way of your shovel

I’m not saying it’s impossible. It’s going to take a lot of prep work and follow up work. No guarantees in success

I tell ya I just don’t see it working

Maybe consider getting into bonsai as a new hobby… I think it’s possible but I would actually move to a a large grow bag and 1/2 bury that… control the soil & nutrient situation and this tree can become an interesting bonsai… though it’s still some years from being refined.

Once you cut the taproot I’d consider the tree domesticated and I really don’t see a good recovery… I mean wtf is the umbrella pruning here anyway.
