Hi everyone, I’m new to plants and I’m really upset because my plant died suddenly.

It was a Kalanchoe blossfeldiana (flowering succulent), thick leaves with small pink/red flowers.

What happened:
• The plant looked completely fine at night
• By morning, one big stem had fallen and turned black/rotten
• Within a few days, other stems also started rotting from the bottom

Care details:
• Indoor plant near a window (bright light, no direct harsh sun)
• Watered about 2–3 times a week, small amounts (not heavy watering)
• Pot has a drainage hole
• Soil is the same nursery soil it came in
• Recently tried propagating cuttings but those also rotted

Observations:
• Some leaves were getting brown/burnt at the tips
• Stems became soft/black from the base (rot?)
• Soil didn’t feel very wet at the bottom

Questions:
1. Was this root/stem rot? How did it happen so fast?
2. Is the nursery soil the issue? Should I change the mix?
3. How often should I actually water this plant?
4. Any tips to successfully propagate cuttings without rot?

Goal:
I really want to avoid this in the future. I got attached to this plant and don’t want to repeat the same mistake. Please help.
