TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Upstate held a fundraiser on Friday to support the Dicey Langston Heritage Garden at Spring Park.
The three-phase project will include the Dicey Langston statue, a children’s botanical garden and the Charters of Freedom Plaza.
Dicey Langston is known for her bravery during the Revolutionary War. She was a young woman who acted as a spy for Patriot soldiers in the area that would become Laurens County.
She later had over 20 children, leaving numerous descendants.
Organizers said the event was a throwback to women gathering for tea and communication, fitting for celebrating a female Revolutionary War heroine.
The community has discussed a Dicey Langston statue for years. The project then expanded to include a children’s botanical garden and Charters of Freedom Plaza, according to organizers.
The children’s garden will reflect the child heroine of the Revolutionary War and provide context for the statue. It will include a spy hunt themed with the Revolutionary War.
Organizers said it is important for children to see that a girl was involved in history and that anyone can make a change, regardless of age.
The park will serve as a place of active learning and engagement and function as a central park for downtown Travelers Rest.
The statue dedication of Dicey Langston will be on Jun. 26. On Constitution Day in September, organizers will open and dedicate the Charters of Freedom Plaza. Within the next year, they hope to complete the children’s botanical garden.
