We recently planted a Kanzan cherry as a feature tree in our front yard. The plant we received was nice and large, well developed for a nursery plant.
It has a very well developed single main stem which looks like it’s going to lead to a pretty upright tall shape. We’d much prefer the more traditional rounded/spreading shape more common in flowering cherries.
Is this temporary and it will begin to spread out naturally or should I tip prune that main stem to encourage branching? Should I tip prune other stems as well?
We’re coming to the later part of autumn here (Australia) so I won’t be doing anything too aggressive but I’m looking at what shaping to do now, and at the start of spring so it gets the best start next spring.
