Memorial Day is often considered the traditional date to start planting.

But gardening experts say you can start getting your hands in the dirt right now.

“There are some cold hardy plants that you can plant now–pansies, violas, some cold hardy vegetables, cabbage, kale, broccoli can be done. And right now is a perfect time to start seedlings inside. So get those ready for the end of May,” said Krystal App, owner of Binghamton Agway.

But it’s not all as easy as it sounds.

App cautions gardeners to keep an eye on the forecast, bringing plants indoors or covering them when temperatures drop.

“It is upstate New York,” she said, “So you never know. We have had frost in May, so it’s just really the weather right now…”

The most important thing to remember?

“Preparation,” App said. “It’s all about preparation. Getting your ground cleared for where you’re going to put, whether it’s a garden, whether it’s your flower bed.”

Amid the planting and prepping, App reminds gardeners of the beauty that makes this time of the year so special.

“Everything’s changing. Things are changing from a drab of brown greens. Your grass is turning green, the trees are going to start flowering soon. So it’s just an exciting time of year,” she said.
