MASSENA — Registration is open for the Seed to Supper program this spring at the Massena Public Library. This free course includes six weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings geared toward low-income beginning gardeners who are interested in growing healthy food for their household. Registration is required.
The course will cover how to plan and plant a garden, manage pests, weed and water, and use the harvest. The focus will be on creative ways to contain costs and make use of available resources. Those who complete the course will receive a garden kit including a trowel, seeds, seedlings, a soil test and more.
The Community Horticulture Educator and Master Gardener Volunteers of Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County (CCE) will lead the sessions, each of which will include a hands-on activity aimed at building confidence and supporting learning. Participants will have opportunities to connect to local resources and a support system to face their challenges.
Sessions will take place on Wednesday evenings 6-7:30pm from April 15 to May 20. CCE is seeking 15 participants for the course and will prioritize adult residents of St. Lawrence County who identify as having a low income or experiencing food insecurity. Having a garden plot is not a requirement as container gardening techniques will be included in the course.
After four years of offering Seed to Supper, CCE has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from graduates. 100% have said they plan to use the course manual in the future, plan to grow some of their own food the following season, and would recommend the course to others. As one graduate put it, “I loved the detailed explanation for almost every topic needed to start my garden.” Another participant said, “The educators were friendly and I liked the activities. It was very informative.”
