Tryon Palace is celebrating the arrival of spring with its annual Garden Lovers’ Weekend and Spring Plant Sale in New Bern.

The events will take place April 10 through April 12, with free garden access offered to the public throughout the weekend. The Spring Plant Sale will run April 10 and 11.

Garden Lovers’ Weekend gives visitors the opportunity to explore the palace’s historic gardens as they come into full bloom. Organizers say guests can expect to see vibrant tulips, hyacinths, peonies, Lenten roses and more across the property.

The Latham Garden, known for its colorful tulip displays, is one of the most photographed spots each spring. Visitors can also stroll through several other gardens on site, including those at the Stanly House, Commission House, Jones House, and the Carraway and Stoney gardens.

In addition to the floral displays, visitors may see plein air artists painting as part of the citywide Arts in April events. On Saturday, April 11, fencing demonstrations will also take place on the South Lawn.

Garden hours for the weekend are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The Spring Plant Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 10 and 11. The sale will feature a variety of herbs, vegetables, shrubs, hanging baskets, and annuals, including some Tryon Palace-grown perennial plants not available elsewhere.

Garden staff will be on hand during the sale to offer advice and help visitors choose the best plants for their gardens.

Visitors can also explore “Try Yarn: Fiber Arts” at the Commission House on Pollock Street, where artists will demonstrate traditional spinning and weaving techniques.

Tryon Palace is part of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
