I have visited neighborhoods where EVERY home has luminarias on Christmas Eve, neighborhoods where EVERYBODY has a garage sale the same weekend, neighborhoods that paint the whole street green for St Patrick's Day.
I owned a home along a big July 4 parade route. you better believe I decorated the porch!

Perhaps not the ahole. My advice actually would be this… make a small little garden that basically swallows up the gnome. That way the only way to see it is if you get close, then you can see it. But not super obvious.
I’ve had some horrible neighbors so I have PTSD…I’d just put the gnome in the yard. I don’t usually fold but with neighbors I’m going to do what it takes to get along.

I don't like knoles but it was a sweet gesture and I would have put it in my flower garden.
Take the gnome to a local (or distant) tourist spot, take a photo, and slip it under your neighbor’s door with a note saying “Wheeee! I be having fun on my ADVENTURES! Love, Gnobby the Gnome.” Every few months do another one. Disavow all knowledge.
Look, if you’re going to have a yard full of magical creatures then you darn well better appreciate whimsy.

I would have put the gnome on the roof, at the highest point. First inclement weather and Nature would have resolved the issue. Because NO ONE messes with Mother Nature!!
I can see both sides here. I don’t think there are any a/holes. I fully understand that some/many people heartily dislike garden gnomes and would never have them anywhere near their gardens. I also know that some people think a garden isn’t complete without a whole city of them. If the old man has always thought that he was being welcoming to new neighbours by giving them a gnome and then seeing his gift displayed in their front lawns he may be genuinely hurt that his gift was dismissed so (in his eyes) ungratefully by op. Op, otoh, is entirely in the right to decide what she wants her garden to look like. Having some of the other neighbours remove their gifted gnomes, which they have every right to do, may be even more hurtful to the old man. NAH, just 2 different people with different likes and dislikes.
I'd put the gnome out as long as I'm not pressured; try to come the heavy with me, & there's no way that gnome lives another day. Tell me what to do & that's exactly what I don't! Mr Thomas would be picking up pieces of that gnome from all over his yard. Even if I liked it, if the Gnome Master tries to force me, then the gnome is toast.

She's NTA, but she could have just humored him. She is rude and this obviously damaged her relationship with the neighbor. She should have just sucked it up and put it in the yard. It's not a hill worth dying on.

I'm with the new homeowner. Gnomes rank the same as clowns for me. They are creepy little buggers. I dont care if others love them in their yards, but they are not for me.
He probably complained to the others about how she refused to put the gnome in her front yard. That gave them the guts to do the same 😂

If they aren’t paying part of my mortgage they don’t get a say in my home and property. The old man can totally rent some space in my front yard to place the gnome but I’d get to set the payment due each month.

Here's the thing. Of course she's not obligated to put a gnom in her front yard. However those are obviously something dear to his heart and his way to welcome somebody in the neighborhood. And I'm sure it brought him joy to see all the gnoms in the neighborhood. Personally I'd rather have a peaceful and nice relationship with my neighbor even if it comes with the cost of a hideous gnom in my frontyard. Rather than having a great front yard but living at war with my neighbor who's help I might need some day.

Put it n the backyard behind a large leafy plant.
Study his lawn thoroughly while on your daily walks. Then sneak over when he's asleep or not home and hide the gnome amongst his collection. See how long it takes him to find it.
