The Beaumont City Council on April 7 approved a five-year lease with the South End Charlton Pollard Neighborhood Association to establish the area’s first community garden.

The garden will be located at 2060 Irving Ave. and includes an option for renewal at the end of the lease term.

During public comments, acting president of the Charlton Pollard Neighborhood Association Chris Jones spoke in support of the agreement, highlighting the project’s benefits for the community.

Jones said the garden will promote community engagement, improve access to fresh food and encourage healthier lifestyles.

“This is about real impact,” Jones said. “This is about taking underutilized land and turning it into something productive. This is about giving our youth something to build, not something to escape. This is about creating a shared space where residents, young and old, can reconnect, contribute and take pride in where they live.”

Under the agreement, the neighborhood association will be responsible for the garden’s operations, labor and upkeep. The group also plans to work closely with the city’s public works, planning and other city departments.
