With only a few weeks remaining until spring arrives in full force, bringing an abundance of blooms to gardens across the country, now is the perfect time to give your hydrangeas a helping hand. A gardening expert has recommended three straightforward tasks to ensure these beautiful plants truly flourish this season.
Gardening enthusiast and TikTok creator Ish has outlined three simple jobs that will significantly benefit your hydrangeas come flowering time.
In a recent video, he said: “If you want your hydrangea to absolutely thrive this year, then there’s only three steps you need to take around about now to make sure you do it right.”
By this point, hydrangeas should be showing signs of new growth. However, any stems that aren’t displaying fresh shoots can simply be removed.

If you spot stems without any growth at the top of the plant, cut them just below the last node. This quick pruning will help channel the plant’s energy away from old growth and towards the new leaves.
Following the pruning, Ish advised gardeners to introduce a slow-release feed into the soil around the hydrangeas. Feed pellets or options such as bloodfish or bone are perfectly suitable for this purpose.
Simply apply the feed around the base of the stem and water it in generously. Finally, applying a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plant is highly recommended. Multipurpose mulch, compost, or bark all work well for this purpose, reports the Express.
Ish explained: “The idea is, you want to hold as much moisture in the ground. So, they like good-draining soil, but they also don’t mind clay soil which is thriving in moisture.

“So keep them nice and wet, and as a result, they’ll be really happy. If you follow those three steps, you’ll have some amazing blooms in your hydrangea.”
Ish highlighted two key factors to bear in mind when tending to your hydrangeas: maintaining adequate moisture in the soil and ensuring they receive partial sun exposure.
