  2. What a timely video!! I JUST purchased and received ten 20 gal. grow bags I plan to use for sweet potatoes for the first time. I see you recommended 25 gal. bags, but I just won't plant six per bag and opt to plant three per bag. I live in zone 6b, but I find so much of your information quite useful! Thanks!!

  3. I’m planning to grow my potatoes in the grow bags this year. Thanks to your recommendation. When I prepare foods for them, one of my pups always runs around the house carrying and destroying toys while another patiently awaits. Thanks for sharing the video.

  4. I standardized in the 7 gallon bags that I can actually lift by myself. Also they fit perfectly in one of the $tree oil change pans which serves the same purpose as your tarps. I also refresh the soil by tossing the soil from the bag into my old cement mixer with some fertilizer. The bags get a good cleaning each year by soaking them in a solution of Safrax chlorine dioxide to kill off the mold and mildew. My bags look good as new!

  5. In the past, you have recommended a potting mix of 3 parts peat moss, 3 parts compost, 1 part perlite. Is there a reason you reduce the compost to 1 part in this video?

  6. If it’s wicked hot there, I must live in hell. I do use a drip irrigation system, on a timer. And I do add an additional watering cycle in the heat of the summer…even on in-ground plants.

  7. question about the tarp under the grow bags. Do you find that it can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes? They can become such a problem here in NJ. I'm afraid to let any water become "standing".

  8. Great video, thanks for promoting these. I have over 200 grow bags ranging in size from 7 gallons up to 100 gallons. I love them, it's the way to go for most people instead of fighting with native soil for years. I fill them with a sand/peat/perlite/compost mix.

There are a few challenges. They need to be irrigated more. And they can be a little tricky to wet at first. SoilMoist water holding polymer really helps. They produce some beautiful produce and very minimal weeding!

  9. Been using five and seven gallon bags to grow tomatoes and squash.. you can't over water.. but if you like to water a lot.. you'll be happy with sacks

  10. I use grow bags just this way. Good info. Also I know Dale is smarter than a kindergartener but that electric outlet behind his bed makes me nervous without outlet covers.

  11. I knew you were from somewhere in the northeast, but after hearing you say “wicked”, it has been confirmed that you are from Massachusetts… unless people down in Jersey are saying wicked now.

  12. Thanks for the encouragement, but not for me. I gave up on grow bags because I didn't want to stand there and water the bag twice a day in August. They dry out too quickly when they're 5 gallons and they're not moveable when they're 15 gallons like they need to be to not dry out.

  13. Awesome video! Why not just use Osmocote? I have used it every year for 12-13 years and get spectacular results with all of my tomatoes, peppers, kale, basil, and other herbs. So much easier than more regular fertilizing and the regular fertilizing hasn't yielded me better results.

  14. Other tips for hot climates: You can use bags on wicking systems with a reservoir beneath. I'm in Texas where even the largest bags dry out too quickly, so I use large storage tubs as reservoirs. I put something in the bottom as a spacer and a piece of old welded wire fencing on top to support the bags. Drill a few holes slightly below the base of the bags as overflow in case of heavy rains (you don't want to drown the roots). If the bins are a dark color, use a light color tarp as a "skirt" around the bin to reflect the sun & keep the heat out. The bags sit down inside the top of the bin so that they don't evaporate around the sides (and heavy mulch slows down evaporation from the top). I've experimented with a lot of materials for wicks and the best I've found (so far) are made from the polyester clothesline that Harbor Freight sells.

Another system I use is to have a support grid over the top of the reservoirs. For these, I use a light color tarp that is pulled up around the sides of the bags to reflect sun/heat and it extends down to protect the reservoirs, as well.

Even with the wicking systems, I still have to water daily – but I only have to water once, not 3-4 times a day in midsummer heat. All but the most heat-tolerant plants are protected with shade cloth; some areas of the garden actually have a double layer of shade cloth over them.

  15. Question so I got the espoma garden tone and bone meal also the fish fertilizer and I have couple bottles of Espoma Grow Liquid (2-2-2) fertilizer and I was wondering if I can combine them would it be okay do I mix them separately or how would you go about it?
Ps. Thank you for all your videos are absolute gold

  16. I simply take mowed grass and pile it high around the grow bags to hold more moisture all around my grow bags.

  17. A little perplexed with why in one of your videos you have a picture of the same Compost claiming you would never use this Compost again. Yet, here you are with the same item recommending to use the product?

  18. I love my fabric bags. Not only do they make it easy for me to move my farm around, I know my farm won't do well in the Texas brick-hard clay/dirt. I've also taken it a step further by covering my farm with an insect netting mainly to keep the squirrels out.

  19. Why not just skip using a bunch of different types of fertilizers and do something simple like a single time release like osmocote? It's designed to not get washed out too quickly, basically purpose built for this task

  20. I stalled a drip system last year based off of your recommendations. I was nervous at first, but your advice and video made it simplistic. I was able to go on a lot of camping trips, worry free, because of the system.
    Thank you so much!

  21. I have black walnut trees surrounding my property! I can't grow anything successful without using grow bags. Thanks for such a helpful video! I love listening to you because of your passion and knowledge that helps people like me….78 years old and I love gardening!

  22. You're the best truly. I grow EVERYTHING in grow bags. Too many tree roots prevent inground gardening so I went to grow bags about 4 years ago and never looked back. I grow it all and they thrive. I control everything which is the best. Thanks for being awesome. I don't grow peppers in the grow bags. For that I use the hard nursery pots like you suggested last year, bout 3 gallons and they love it!

  23. Furniture sliders are what I use on anything over 30 lbs. I’ve moved heavy furniture by myself with large sliders.

  24. Be careful of that stuffing. If not supervised all the time he could swallow some and it can cause a life threatening blockage.

  25. Where was this video 12 years ago when I started gardening ???? 2 questions… Is there a lifespan for these? And what about onions?

  26. Thanks for legitimizing grow bags! I think I'm gonna try cux in one (or 2) and let them crawl up a cattle panel. They are such room hogs in a raised bed. I want to contain them/be able to follow where their vines are coming from and going to! Another really good video. Thank you!

  27. I only use grow bags to grow my vegetables and flowers. I've had amazing results. I use 15 gal for tomatoes any kind, they do great. 10 gal for zucchini, strawberries and flowers. I also place an olla or clay type cone that holds a wine bottle to help with keeping the soil moist. They release water when the soil gets dry. Works great. I've used big saucers in the past, but really like this new way better. Really liked your information. Thank you.

  28. Ah, Dad! He didn’t deserve it, but he was there. I had to chew him up. He understands. Can I have a new stuffy for next time? Dale is such a sweetheart at the end of each video. Thanks for sharing your experience with me. My mom recommended your channel to me and I am watching everything in your back catalog to learn about gardening. Your zone is the same as mine even though I’m in the SoCal desert. I have found so many answers to questions from your content, so Thank You. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

  29. I noticed your Meyer lemon behind you. Is it also in a grow bag? It would sure make it easier to bring in during our cold Idaho winters.
    Darlene

  30. Your videos are always the best. Clear, enlightening, and full of detail. TMG, you are a gem! Thank you. ❤🌱❤️
