Riverland Community College is offering a new Home and Market Gardener Training Program through its Customized Training division, providing hands-on, season-long instruction for individuals interested in growing their own food and exploring small-scale agriculture.
According to a release from the school earlier this week, the program will take place Mondays from April 20 through Oct. 26 at the Austin campus, with no class held May 25 or Sept. 7. Sessions begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be held in Room A108 of the West Building.
Designed for beginning gardeners, aspiring growers and community members, the program combines classroom learning with practical, in-garden experience. Participants will receive their own garden plot at Riverland, weekly instruction and mentorship, and a full-season growing experience.
Instruction will be led by Ruth Jovaag-Ofstedal, a local farmer and vegetable gardener. The curriculum covers a range of topics, including sustainable and organic growing practices, soil and water management, pest and weed control, season extension, and post-harvest handling. The program also introduces participants to local food marketing and entrepreneurship basics.
