A new spa and wellness retreat, with a sauna and hot tubs, is set to open at a popular Essex garden centre. The development at Scott’s of Southend in Rochford could also include a cold plunge pool surrounded by illuminated palm trees.

The garden centre already has a restaurant alongside the main shopping area. Designs for the spa plans show other exotic plants, outdoor showers and various types of outdoor lighting.

The plans state: “The proposed scheme will offer significant benefits to health and wellbeing and introduce a new leisure facility to this part of the borough. The site sits to the rear of the existing commercial development and is in an area with no prevailing character. The design of the development is of high quality.”

There would also be a rectangular building with changing rooms, a waiting area and storage space. The proposed wellness centre will have a maximum of twenty people per hour.

Local councillor Julie Gooding said she’s “fully supportive” of the plans if it reduces the “burden” on the NHS. She added: “This aligns with growing demand for preventative health and holistic care. The outcome is a healthier local population and reduced long-term pressure on NHS services. From the business and economy perspective, it will see more revenue streams, which will mean a more stable, diversified income.”
