It turns out there is a simple way to stop moss growing back on patios without needing to scrub at it or use harsh chemical productsPicture of moss on patio slabs.

Moss can lend properties a charming rustic feel, which explains why numerous gardeners tolerate its presence, but it poses genuine dangers and heightens the chance of slips when permitted to flourish on paved areas. The hazard intensifies during springtime, as it accumulates into a dense, slick coating throughout winter and stays wet and treacherous owing to April’s rainfall.

The most compelling reason to tackle it immediately is that moss retains dampness on surfaces, and when patios stay moist, stone varieties can start fracturing while wooden ones may begin decomposing. Many people resort to hosepipes or pressure washers for patio maintenance, but landscape designer Mary Stone has cautioned that powerwashing can prove excessively abrasive for patio materials.

Mary said: “I once used a power washer, which is risky for damaging the stone. Then there’s the ick factor of scum kicking back at you.”

As reported by the Express, she added: “The power washing outcome was clean centers of each stone, while the areas near the joints remained green. Not so pretty.”

What is the most effective method for moss elimination?

Moss is a plant without roots that propagates by dispersing its spores into crevices and gaps, but should any tiny particle persist, it will regenerate remarkably rapidly.

Pressure washing frequently proves inadequate for moss removal from patios as it fails to eliminate the spores embedded deeply within the joints, meaning regrowth occurs within mere weeks.

However, spending hours scrubbing patios or resorting to aggressive chemical moss treatments isn’t necessary, as one of the most effective methods for eliminating moss is simply pouring washing-up liquid on it.

Mary explained: “A good old soapy water mix made from three tablespoons of biodegradable dish soap (free of harmful bleach or fragrance) to one gallon of warm water, can do the trick.

“Be sure to use a plastic or natural-bristle deck brush; never a metal brush, as it will scratch.”

Why does washing-up liquid prevent moss from returning?

While it may sound straightforward, washing-up liquid penetrates the waxy protective coating on moss, rapidly dehydrating the spores and killing them off.

The solution can penetrate deeply into moss to target spores lodged within patio surfaces, eliminating every trace and preventing regrowth throughout the spring months.

Using washing-up liquid to clear patio moss

Simply combine washing-up liquid with warm water in a bucket and apply the mixture to the affected areas.

Allow several hours for the solution to break down the moss and let it desiccate, after which it should appear completely lifeless.

Sweep away the dried moss using a broom or stiff-bristled brush. Afterwards, rinse with clean water or a hosepipe to dilute any remaining washing-up liquid, preventing potential damage to surrounding plants or grass.

Your patio should now be entirely clear and gleaming, achieved using an inexpensive product that won’t damage your garden.
