Is there any advantage to buying landscaping rock from a Vendor vs private party
Looking to edge the side of my house with river rock. By the ton it's going to be more from a major company vs private sale. Any major advantage of paying more?
its fucking rock dude. If you want to pick it up and transport, still fucking rock.

They will load it into your truck for you usually. Just a scoop from the machine if you have a truck.
And a guarantee (to a point) of quality and weight. That’s about it

In most of those pictures you’re paying them to do work for them and getting the rock. That’s why you buy from a vendor or landscape company.

Depends if you want just regular ol’ mass produced rock or if you want that premium artisanal rock. You got to make the decision that’s right for your needs and budget.

You might want more a couple years from now to touch up or to expand. Sometimes if you buy stuff in bags at Lowe’s they change the supplier a couple years later & it doesn’t match.

If you’re getting it out of someone’s beds the homeowners should pay you. Pay a pro to deliver it to you

The only benefit is that a vendor can dump all the rock in a truck bed while a private sale you’re going to have to shovel the rock into buckets to transport and you’ll probably get dirt and weed seeds mixed in the rock.

Private party rock I bought was very dirty. Looked clean in pics though. Prob bought 100-200lbs worth of sand in 1.5 tons

My experience is new rock from the supply yard is mostly clean, rock reclaimed from someone’s landscaping will be dirty af. They should be paying you for taking it away or at least free so that’s the cost advantage.

Be cautious when purchasing rock from private sources, as there is a risk of encountering counterfeit products. To ensure authenticity, it is best to obtain your rock from an authorized distributor like a 5-Rock dealer.

May be a little dirty but so what, wash it in the driveway.

You’ll be able to get more of rocks that look similar if you don’t buy enough the first time.

Consistency maybe if you’re buying from multiple people. It might not look all the same

Calculate how many cubic yards you need and weigh the different costs. By the bucket is always a rip off I’m in Ohio and can get a yard of washed 34 aggregate for around $60. If you need a lot it may be worth it to pay delivery and just work out of a pile in your driveway

Cuts to my wife and I shoveling river rock from a ladies drive way while pay $150 to do it ourselves. Just buy from the landscapers. It wasn’t worth it at all

Let me sell you some artisanal virgin first-press heirloom custom rock then. Just $120/bucket.
Just go to a landscaping materials supplier and buy them by the cubic yard, mate! Any supplier that has a fancy website with nice pictures of rocks is not it – too expensive. No-name ones that have piles of stuff everywhere are it – the one I get my stuff from is like 1/10th the price of anyone else.

My experience is that those private individuals do not charge what is on the listing. You reach out they ask how much you need and then they give you a price for the material and delivery. I’ve never had it come out to be what they have on the listing but it’s normally close to what the bulk material yard would charge per cubic yard, and they can deliver more than one pickup truck at once so I’m fine paying the slight surcharge and delivery fee to not have to make 5 trips

Coompany dumps 2 tons in your driveway and you shovel it into something to put where you want.
Buy rocks out of someone’s yard. You shovel the into a trailer or truck probably getting extra dirt or debris then dump at in you driveway and do the first paragraph.
You need to shovel the rocks an extra time by getting them out of someone’s yard.

I would just recommend figuring out what color palette you’re looking for in rock, then price rock at your local landscaping supply stores vs local big box stores.

rocks is rocks

The vendor will provide warranty work for your rock. The rock from the private party will be sold “as-is”.

Watch out for counterfeits with private sales
