Maybe in order to understand all of this is to know why they wiggle to begin with.
They take in oxygen through their skin, not gills or lungs. They literally breathe through the skin and by wiggling, they increase the waterflow which brings on more oxygen.
If you think about it, you and me probably breathe differently too.
Having said that, the right one looks like it’s shedding or molting. I’m not even sure what they are from that angle, some kind of mosquito or fly larvae that turns into pupae and then fly.
