Gardeners growing roses have been urged to do one task in April if they want their flowers to bloom. Roses are often considered not only among the most popular flowers to grow in the UK but worldwide, mainly because of their beauty and the colour and life they can bring to any garden.

And April is a great time to probably start tending to outdoor spaces, whether that’s giving it a well-deserved clean up or starting to plant crops and flowers, as the rising temperatures and increased hours of sunlight will make a significant difference to plants.

However, UK gardeners who have already started growing roses have been advised to carry out one specific task this month to ensure that when fully grown, they have a set of blooming and vibrant flowers.

Liam Beddall, head rosarian at David Austin, a family-owned company that grows and breeds roses, told Ideal Home that April is the perfect time to fertilise your roses.

The expert recommends giving roses a “slow-release, granular-based feed”, as it breaks down slowly throughout the whole season.

He added: “Roses are very hungry plants, and applying feed replenishes lost nutrients and encourages vigorous growth.”

This month is particularly ideal for feeding roses as new foliage begins to appear, signalling the start of the growing season. While feeding your roses is important, knowing how often to do so is equally important.

According to Mr Beddall, a continuous, slow-release fertiliser only needs to be applied at the start of the season. In contrast, others can be used once in spring and again after the first flush of flowers, which he says encourages a second flush in repeat-flowering roses.

Concentrated liquid feed can be used on roses every two weeks, he added.

Feeding is essential for growing roses successfully. However, overfeeding them can do more harm than good, the expert warns. So be sure to feed your roses appropriately to prevent stunted growth.
