Hello Tree-Wizards,
i'd ask for your opinion on how to proceed.
Visited my parents and they showed me this.
This Japanese Cherry recently split right down the trunk during some late season wet and heavy snow the area got.
It can't fall anywhere it would hurt or damage something.
They already took off a huge branch (red).
I would try do a bit of weight reduction on the blue branch, run a big bolt with big washers trough the trunk to close and support the split and see how long it will make it.
I can still cut it off completely if it dies next year or in 5 years …
Also I suggested to establish a new sprout from the bottom (green) where there is already a lot of growth – they always cut it back before. So when the blue branch finally dies off there is already a new growth established.
They are not emotionally attached, but its a nice tree nonetheless.
What do you think?
Thanks a lot!

I think it’s a great candidate for some science project. Get a couple bolts there and see what happens.
I think it’s done for but given it’s not gonna cost you anything and it doesn’t pose any risk it’s very much worth a try
It’s worth a try. It may extend the tree’s life a little bit.
