I am mulching this tree for the first time and realized it may have been in a mulch volcano before. How do I go about rectifying this situation? Especially considering the small roots that are apparent after pushing away the mulch.
I would work on removing soil without hurting roots until you find the root flare. Once you find the flare you can decide on what to cut. I would recommend an air spade be used if you have the money and care a lot about the tree. Otherwise it could take a while to do it correctly.
