Easter is the time for spring candies and holiday brunch—but it’s also the time of year that many gardeners kick off their gardening plans. A recent Instacart report revealed the platform’s top orders during Easter weekend—and right up there with classic holiday ham and jelly beans are supplies for a gorgeous garden.

Instacart identified four different gardening necessities that shoppers are grabbing during Easter weekend. The platform’s report examined the top 2025 orders during Easter week to determine what customers ordered most (and how much those orders increased compared to the yearly average). While you finalize details of your annual Easter egg hunt, it might also be time to tend to your garden.

1. Annual Flowers

Orders for annual plants were up 157% during Easter weekend, according to Instacart. Spring is a fantastic time to plant cold-hardy annuals such as pansies and snapdragons. If you live in a warmer region and are past your last frost date, you can plant heat-loving annuals such as cosmos, marigolds, and zinnias. They’ll fill your garden with vibrant color all summer long. Plant them in containers to decorate your porch or patio, or use them to fill any bare spots in your backyard.

2. Mulch

During Easter weekend in 2025, orders for mulch rose 133%. Spring is one of the best times of year for adding mulch to your garden. Apply a 2-inch layer before any weeds have the chance to sprout; the mulch will block sunlight from reaching weed seedlings, so you’ll have less yard work to do later.

Mulching your garden also helps your soil stay moist for longer. The summer sun can evaporate water before roots can absorb it. When you top your soil with mulch, it creates an insulating layer that keeps your soil cool and moist, reducing heat and drought stress on your garden plants.

3. Soil

Whether you’re prepping your spring planters, filling your raised beds, or amending the soil in your backyard, gardening and potting soil are must-haves before you start your spring planting. High-quality bagged soil mixes will provide your plants with the drainage and nutrients they need to flourish all season. It’s no wonder that Instacart orders for soil rose 128% over Easter weekend in 2025.

4. Fertilizer

The final gardening supply that Instacart shoppers focus on for springtime gardening is fertilizer, with orders jumping 124% over Easter weekend. All those fast-growing annuals going into containers demand lots of nutrients to fuel their flowers over the months, so it’s best to apply a slow-release granular fertilizer at planting time. A general purpose liquid fertilizer is also good to have on hand to give your annuals a boost later in the season.
