I planted asparagus in the spring of ‘25 that is now producing long bois. I’ve heard that while technically harvestable now, it’s better to not touch it to let the plants / their roots get established for one additional year. Is there any truth to this or is it an old wives tale? Any advice appreciated!

The current recommendation is that you can harvest if stalks are larger than a pencil, for a one to two weeks, so basically one or two spears per plant. This will improve future harvests, not harm them.

Let it grow, there is truth to this as far as establishing an asparagus patch that will last for years. You can harvest now but you may stunt/kill some roots and set your patch back. I’m in the same boat, but mine was a transplant. It’s throwing up stalks the size of my thumb, but it’s only year one after transplant so I’m trying my best to let it be and really establish itself
