RADNOR—Chanticleer Garden is proud to announce that Bill Thomas, executive director and head gardener, has been awarded the Elizabeth Medal of Honour by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the UK’s leading gardening charity. The honor recognizes Chanticleer’s and Bill’s outstanding contributions to the advancement of horticulture on a global scale.

Established in 2023 with the gracious assent of His Majesty King Charles III, the Elizabeth Medal of Honour was created in perpetual remembrance of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s glorious reign. The Medal enables the RHS Council to confer conspicuous honor on international horticulturists who have significantly advanced the science, art, or practice of horticulture for the benefit of all generations and the environment. In recognition of the duration of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, only 70 medals may be held at any one time, making this distinction among the rarest in the horticultural world.

Under Bill’s leadership, Chanticleer has earned an international reputation as a place of extraordinary creative beauty and horticultural excellence. His commitment to blending innovative design with environmental stewardship has made the garden not only a destination for visitors but a source of inspiration and learning for gardeners, designers, and horticulturists worldwide.

“Working at Chanticleer has taught me many things, but most of all to value creativity,” said Bill Thomas. “I’ve become a better designer, inspired by what I’ve seen our staff do. Creativity includes being environmentally friendly while producing a beautiful garden. I am thrilled to accept this medal recognizing Chanticleer staff, the founding Rosengarten family, and Board members.”

The RHS’s vision is a world where gardening is embraced as a way of life, a source of joy and fulfillment, building healthier lives, stronger communities, and thriving environments.

Bill Thomas’s work at Chanticleer exemplifies these values, and this award reflects the profound global impact of his dedication to the art and science of horticulture. View the full RHS People Award listing here: rhs.org.uk/about-us/our-people/rhs-awards.
