I noticed the base of the branch having new growth points , could this be the reason of the small leaves? As in the plant is directing energy into branching out instead of bigger leaves?

It’s a good possibility as the bamboo pole doesn’t allow for the plant to root into anything and mature. Once it feels like it’s hit the optimal light at the top it will be more inclined to branch out and get more light from lower.
Edit to add: If you want it to continue to get bigger as one vine you need to raise the light or lower the plant so that the light is hitting the top of the plant.
