Hi all!
This is my first year growing garlic. I planted them in October of last year and they have been growing like mad ever since. I pulled a test garlic last month and they did not seem ready. However, I have some other ones that seem like they are bursting at the seams and ready to harvest. I included a picture of one of them that I pulled today and photos of the 3 beds.
My thoughts:
I think bed 1 can go for longer maybe harvest next month.
Bed 2 is throwing me off. I see a lot of yellow and I’m thinking they may be dying back and I need to pick them. But they have recently been pushing out new leaves(?) they have been crinkly like they can’t get out well. This is also the bed of one I pulled.
Bed 3 seems ready to go if not over harvest time. I’m not seeing too much new growth but there has been a little. This bed has been a giant question mark in comparison to the others. Most obviously the size difference. There is also a lump forming in some of these which I have no idea what’s happening there either.
I know garlic normally is harvested around May/June, but with how they are looking, I feel they may be ready now. I live in zone 9B. This is 2 different types of garlic but they are both soft neck
Should I follow procedure and wait the month out or pull now based on what I’m seeing? Any guidance would be super helpful! Thanks!!

Yes, please harvest ASAP! Please, please, know that any timetables you may have read about (Btw, all from growers way, way north of you) with these May/June earliest possible harvest dates, those dates just don’t apply to Florida or to South Texas where I am. That reality has been my lived experience and looks like that is your reality as well, based on what I am seeing in your photos. So much that gets written about growing garlic doesn’t apply to south Texas and apparently from what I can tell from your post and other Florida based gardeners doesn’t apply there either.
Your garlic in photos 1-4 looks exactly like mine has here when it has gone past its peak and the heads are busting loose so to speak. Broken wrapper heads are still useable, they just don’t tend to store as long after curing.
