Are your garden pots feeling a bit lost in the landscape? In today’s video, I’m back at John’s garden for a very special Wednesday Walkabout to discuss the “veneer” of a beautiful garden: container placement and composition. We’re diving deep into the art of grouping pots, choosing the right exposure for your plants, and creating impactful focal points that draw the eye. From “brutalizing” root-bound plants with a bread knife to achieve better health, to creating sophisticated color echoes with high-dappled shade lovers like Coleus and Wire Vine—we are covering it all!
Whether you’re gardening in the challenging Oklahoma climate or just looking to layer your landscape with professional design principles like scale, texture, and negative space, this walkthrough will inspire you to rethink your container strategy. 🏺✨
🌿 In This Video, We Discuss:
The “Veneer” of the Garden: Why pots are the final, most important layer of your landscape.
Placement Strategy: How to group containers to make the biggest impact.
Plant Selection: Using color echoes (like hot pink and yellow!) to tie your garden together.
The “Surgical” Side of Gardening: Tips for pruning, root-trimming (yes, it’s a contact sport!), and pinching back plants for a lusher look.
Designing with Scale: How to combine smaller pots to create a singular, grand composition.
Patience & Risk: Embracing the “crapshoot” of gardening and rewarding yourself with high-dappled shade retreats.

’d love to know: How do YOU decide where to place your focal point pots? Do you follow a specific 'formula' or just go by feel?
I am repeatedly experiencing difficulty watching recent videos. They end up hanging up in a loop and I have to power off m😢 phone and come back to it. I saw another comment about this in last few weeks so I thought I’d make you aware also. Unsure if you’ve changed format or something or if it is on my side.
Could John share his source for his white round planter? Thank you Really great show. You and John are the definition of a team.
John our Celebrity ❤❤❤❤ i love your garden 😊 thank you so so much for sharing
Enjoyed this video, the interaction between you two creatives and the ideas to consider.
Thank you!
Mystery bush at 2:57
Can't tell if the leaves have a little sawtooth edge but it looks like a kerria japonica.
You should consider using the African Daisy variety of Arcotis, Majestic Ruby or for you Linda, Arcotis Sunset. They are curly and silver leafed like a horizontal lying Dusty Miller, trailing over the side of the pot and wonderfully drought tolerant. The flower is a very bright deep raspberry color for Majestic Ruby and a deep coral orange for the Sunset.
Where did you get that lovely table-set, with the fabulous blue chairs?
You are both lovely and very knowledgeable xxx❤
I find it’s hard for me to watch some of your videos at this time because I live in Chicago and our weather is still wintry in spring. You’re months ahead of us. 😊
It was interesting watching you help John with his garden!
Thank you for inspiring me and saying that it's ok to make mistakes and just go for it and see what happens. When I make a mistake now and then, I don't get discouraged, I learn from it. 🥰💗💖❤🙏🙏
this was such a fun time! you guys are genuine friends.
Linda and John! What a wonderful video, thank you. I would guess the mystery plant is goats beard. Everything inside and out are fabulous. I am such a copycat. I just ordered a weeping boxwood from Amazon. New to me!
What is the name of the Mexican restaurant, John recommended. I didn't catch the name. Thanks
Thank you for letting us tag along with you and John annnd Stewart, while you change things up in Johns front areas. Fun! 😊🪴
John just has an amazing yard and style! Enjoyed the video.
Always fun to go to John’s home and garden. Love all the pots
Kerria japonica
Love you and John together ❤
Kerria japonica. It needs full sun. In the rise family.
I love the wildness of John's yard.
that bush with the yellowy-gold bloom that you guys mentioned might not get enough sun is a bush that I once grew from a cutting of my grandma's….and it get's really large.
I overwinter several coleus plants and then start propagating them early spring and have all the coleus I can use.
Another great episode. Thank you for sharing your good times! It is very inspiring and uplifting! Love the bottle bouquet!
