I have 2 SOH that are in desperate need of repotting and in terrified to completely kill them off.
the first one is in a way to large pot. when I got it, it was full and luscious, but has slowly died off. first spider mites and next I feel watering issue. the top dries out too quick and bottom stays wet. so they start to get crispy and dry. the ends have slowly died off and went from full trailing vines to like 5.
the 2nd one is completely hydrophobic. soil is rock hard. even when I bottom soak and top water. let it soak. it will finally absorb water but stays rock hard.
help and advice not to lose these 2 beauties.

Repotting strings always hurts cause they look absolutely miserable until they anchor and you may lose some strands in the process.
My best advice for you is prepare the pot(s) you’ll be using for this with gritty soil but also maybe some orchid bark or coco coir to hold on to moisture a little longer. Then it’s time to either unpot and look at what roots you have or start chopping and propping.
For string plants it’s best to coil or lay them over the surface of the soil and then go over the nodes with a bit of extra soil to bury them. Depending on your microclimate (dry indoors, humid indoors, growlights, etc) you’ll need to watch them carefully for the next few weeks. I grow outdoors in a mostly dry climate and if I don’t mist or water the soil at least every 2-3 days they dry out quick. Though while they’re establishing and don’t have roots too much water/humidity can be a lot for them so really just watch them.
I’ve also noticed that placing a few well placed pumice or tuff small rocks under some of the vines help create air pockets that promote air circulation which helps prevent when they rot at the top and dry at the bottom (though you said you had the opposite problem)
So that’s my advice to you 🙂 if you have questions or anything feel free to post 😊
