    It’s English ivy. It’s not good for the tree. Or anything really. Cut off the stems at the base and
    it will die, separate off, and then you can remove it.

    That tree is really suffering, hope it can recover if you remove the ivy.

    I agree with everything but will add 2 things an exploration drilling by a pro to see if it’s already fucked or not aaaaaand why is there a screwdriver stuck in it

    When you cut, remove about 6 inches from each vine. That way, it can’t reconnect and keep growing.

    Note that ivy will regrow from the roots, even if you cut it off flush. You either need to keep trimming it back for a year or so until it fully dies or hit it with herbicide.
