Hi! This maple has gotten too large and my husband is threatening to cut it down since it’s so close to the house, which I desperately want to avoid.

Is it possible to significantly cut this back and it survive? How would I even do that? Has it gone too far?

That’s a great specimen of Japanese maple, and it’s not big enough or be any real threat to the house. Just trim anything that looks like it’s going to touch the house and otherwise enjoy a tree that many would covet. Also tell your husband to chill.

a small japanese maple bush would have been ideal in that location not a tree

What exactly is the problem with it?

Maples absolutely hate being heavily cut back. Do not try and make it shorter. It will not regrow a nature looking canopy.

A Japanese maple is the poster child for an appropriate tree to have near a building, they rarely fail mechanically (I.E. snap or uproot during storms) and thave gentle non-aggressive roots.

Beautiful specimen, just trim the small branches rubbing against the house and enjoy its beauty.

This is an absolutely beautiful specimen, why would anyone want to remove it?

Your husband seems to be scared of someone with superior wood. 😂

If he’s worried about a perfect 8inch diameter tree. Lordt I got a 120ft pine I’ll let kill me in my sleep cuz it’s beautiful.

Prune only above lowest leave on branch. That thing will bend a gutter if it falls into you house. It’s meant to lean and canopy.

Someone will come and save it maybe, but don’t touch that thing, and tell your hubby to stop being soft.

Wow! That’s a really excellent Japanese Maple. They don’t usually get taller than 25 ft and that takes them around 25 or so years to do. The stems look well-balanced, the canopy looks like someone wanted to keep the walkway clear and the canopy defined without touching it too much, the lean is probably just for sunlight but it complements the building well…just a nice looking tree.

It would’ve benefitted from maybe being another 5-7 feet away from the house, but it’s not going to cause you any problems unless you think there’s something more serious weakening the foundation. It’s not going to cause damage, though you still might want to baaaarely prune it away from your downspouts.

Anyways, tell your husband to chill. It’s gorgeous.

There ist no world where this tree will be a danger to the house

Whoa that’s an incredible tree. Very jealous.

Cutting this tree down would be absolutely absurd. People pay hundreds for Japanese maples a fraction of this size.

Prune it like a normal person JFC

That Japanese maple probably maxed out in height. I would leave it as is. The root system is wimpy and it doesn’t like being cut hard.
