hello wise folks

i was planning to cull this entire lawn (90% weeds) via layers of cardboard and a lifetime supply of woodchips, and have raised garden beds inside the greenhouse.

is this a terrible plan? i really want to avoid using weedmat for environmental reasons. we live by the beach and its all sand under there.

please bestow your wisdom upon me as I am very much still learning!

You could always grow native ground cover if its about looks. Cardboard and woodchips will only stop weeds maybe a year. If you really wanna remove weeds and grass your gonna have to put landscape fabric down.

I have the cardboard and chip mulch method going right now.  It works for weed suppression.   I smothered an entire lawn.  I am getting a few weeds popping up in the area that need a mulch refresh and every once in a while I find one that I need to pull.    I plan to just reapply (soon actually) and thicken it back up.

Lay cardboard and mulch DEEP.  It’ll work.  It’s been almost a year and it’s still smothering like 98 percent.   I’m not going to say it’s perfect but I have had good results.  Just expect to top it off as needed. Mine has lasted about the year but I admittedly  didn’t cover evenly so I need to reapply this month.

Edit to add – look into how this method works on sand though! Idk if it’ll speed up erosion etc.

I’ve seen it time and time again, weed fabric/plastic/anything never works and its a pain to remove. Cardboard and/or weather resistant tarps worked a treat for my yard, make sure you wet the cardboard and top up the wood mulch if it starts to get thin anywhere. I use cane straw but that breaks down much faster.
