MAYSVILLE, Ky. (WXIX) – Hundreds of people gathered in Maysville to see Cardinal Timothy Dolan perform a ribbon-cutting and bless the new gardens at St. Patrick’s.

The Gardens at St. Patrick’s moved one step closer to opening to the public with the ceremony.

Several public figures attended the ribbon-cutting, including former President Bill Clinton and Cardinal Dolan.

“They have built an incredible, beautiful space for people to come, have a quiet moment and reflect,” Dolan said.

Katie Cotterill, executive director for the gardens, said the project has been in the works for several years.

“The garden consists of the stations of the cross, we also have a butterfly garden, and some water features and stuff, but it is one of the most incredibly thought-out design places I have ever seen,” Cotterill said.

Dolan said the trip to Maysville has been special.

“To have something this majestic with these bronze life-sized figures of the last moments of our Lord’s life, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend Holy Week,” he said.

Attendees said seeing Cardinal Dolan elevated the event.

“It was a real honor seeing him and meeting him, and talking with him, and so forth, so I was kind of excited about the fact that I was even going to see him,” one attendee said.

“It is a great honor to have someone of his esteem to come to Maysville and participate in this dedication,” another attendee said.

The official grand opening for the gardens is May 12.
