I've never seen a pothos thrive like this in person, but inspecting it closer, the plant is dead at the base, yet it's still growing these insane new leaves. How on earth?

You can see it grew arial roots all down that bark and probably into the soil. Pothos are climbers and create more mature leaves as the climb

If a part of a plant dies in nature, the whole plant doesn’t have to die. The aerial roots also absorb moisture & support life.

Pothos are easy & laid back

You haven’t watered evenly across the base of the plant. Pothos is a plant where you don’t water the base, you water the pole and the leaves. I’ve had this happen when combining plants and one was stronger than the other
