What would you do if this was your house?

  1. Read some books, raise a family, be kind and gentle to my grandchildren, take care of the little things to pass it along when my time on the earth comes to an end.

That house looks like a monopoly piece dropped in a pasture because it has absolutely nothing anchoring it to the earth. You need to build deep foundation beds that pull way out from the porch and wrap around the corners. Fill them with sweeping connected masses of native evergreen and deciduous shrubs to give the architecture some weight. Also stop fighting the turf war under that massive tree. Grass hates dense shade and root competition. Smother the struggling turf under the entire canopy drip line and turn it into a massive woodland shade garden packed with native ferns and sedges.

You also need a real approach because right now the front door is completely lost. Cut a wide curving natural stone walkway from that dirt drive directly to the porch steps. Make it wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Before you start tearing up sod or ordering pallets of flagstone you should drop this photo into the GardenDream web app. It lets you overlay different path materials and test the scale of those new planting beds directly on your yard. It is a solid safety net to make sure your layout actually balances out that giant tree before you spend money or break your back doing the labor.

I would take all my cats, 2 dogs, a horse, a cow, two goats, lots of chickens and live happily ever after

What a darling house! I would suggest planting a mix of perennials and shrubs around the house for color without overwhelming the space. Think a curved flower bed hugging the front porch with coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, and lavender.

Drink some iced tea on the swing with the wife and watch the children play in the field

Be utterly delighted. What a lovely home! That tree! The porch!! It’s gorgeous.

I would consider a nice front door/color. As well as doing something tall-ish on both sides of the window. Could do a little flagstone path to the front door with little shrubs and flowers.

Grow my own food and build a greenhouse that’s bigger than the house and sell plants probably

I would roll on the ground in happiness, but then would plant some trees around (definitely at least one apple), maybe put up a pole for a stork, make a nice vegetable patch, get some chicken, make a little fountain/stream for wildlife, and then drink rum while relaxing in a rocking chair on the porch

plant about 20 trees, maybe a brick patio with a fire pit. then just enjoy.

Rejoice daily and plant a garden.
