Tulip poplar maintenance

Greetings, I have a tulip poplar planted by a relative who is now passed but was very fond of this tree. I’d like to preserve it in good health as well as possible.

Should I be clearing the root area around the trunk and be concerned about girdling roots in this setting? Aside from removing dead wood, is there pruning/shaping that should be done?
