KAMIAH — Gardeners of all ages crowded around the tables displaying commercial seeds and hand-packaged seed collections for exchanging at the Garden Expo and Seed Exchange on Sunday, March 15, at the Kamiah Seventh-day Adventist Church fellowship hall. Seed catalogs were on display and even potted comfrey plants were available.
“It was a great gathering of friends and neighbors!” one attendee said.
When organizer Pat Snyder successfully got everyone to sit down, he began with prayer and then invited Mary Lee, owner of Heirlooms Evermore Seed Company in St. Maries, to explain the history of their business.
Laila Gonzales followed, presenting slides about growing dahlias successfully. Fernando Borgert, an avid gardener, gave composting tips, followed by Steve Nakamura, an orchardist, who described a tried-and-true way to plant fruit trees that yielded fruit years ahead of other trees he had planted. He shared diagrams of the “Ellen White Planting Method” with the attendees. Joanna Hart shared a slide presentation about plotting your garden visually using the Seedtime app (seedtime.us), produced by the Dysinger family, and Friedrich Hart identified edible plants in the area. Platters of cookies were served to the attendees who lingered over the seed displays at the close of the event.
