As spring has finally arrived, keeping pesky bugs at bay remains a genuine headache for all gardeners. Many homeowners resort to buying toxic pest killers, which can prove more harmful than helpful by damaging the health of their soil.

Horticultural experts Thompson and Morgan warn that chemical ant killers “only work if you apply them while also destroying the entire nest. This could extend a long way underground and cause major upheaval to your garden”.

However, one domestic and garden specialist has shared the best non-toxic approach to repel ants and other troublesome insects, using a bathroom staple.

Molly Miller, also known as @therenegadehome on Instagram, revealed that using a bar of soap is the most effective method to eliminate ants in your flower bed.

She explained: “The best non-toxic waste to keep bugs away. Use an old cheese grater to grate up a bar of Irish Spring soap, then sprinkle it through your flower beds to keep pests out.

“You can even use the bar itself to drag along your door frames to deter bugs from entering.”

The Irish Spring soap contains pest-repelling citrus fragrances and picaridin. The scent makes it difficult for pests to find your plants to colonise.

Ants are put off by strong and sharp smells, including natural ingredients such as vinegar, citrus, and peppermint. Another tip she suggested is to use cinnamon.

Molly suggested, “Sprinkle a bit of ground cinnamon around your deck and patio to ward off ants and bees. I even like to mix it with water and then spray down the areas where we spend the most time.”

Diamond Pest Control advises that to evict ants from your garden, you should scatter cinnamon along their trails. You can also apply cinnamon to the places they frequent, such as cracks and crevices.

They further explained: “There are two reasons why this is effective. Firstly, it’s theorised that ants cannot stand the smell of cinnamon.

“Secondly, when ants inhale this spice, it causes them to suffocate. Regarding spices, turmeric is also reputed to deter ants from your home in spring or indeed at any other time of year.”
