I started my compost journey last year after reading lots of posts on this sub. got excited, collected food scraps and paper scraps and added them to a tub on my balcony. then I left it over the summer, basically didn’t touch it for months. today I opened the tub and it’s thick and wet; kinda clay-like in consistency and quite hard to break up. It also smells…not great! has my laziness ruined my first attempt? can I do anything to make this usable? thanks!!

Aside from dumping a lot of plastics or herbicides in it you can’t “ruin” it.

Add more browns and you’ll get it to where you want.

Here’s the secret, you can’t ruin compost unless you dump a bunch of toxic chemicals in it. If it looks like shit, just keep adding more stuff and peeing on it and wait until it looks good.

Looking a bit wet that’s all. Add some brown, give it a nice stir and you’re good to go.
